Hey do you want to try gold on your ice cream? My friend asked me as she invited me to the interesting ice cream shop “Matcha and More” in the Chinatown area of New York City.
Sure, of course I did. I mean I was a sucker for anything new and different.
Matcha N’ More has an incredibly popular and Instagram ready treat with their “24k Gold” ice cream. But really is it work all the extra when it’s all said and done?
Coming in at about 3 – 4 dollars extra a serving, the gold leaf is incredible thin (as expected) and pulled out with some small tweezers and placed on your ice cream. It melts easier in your mouth than the actual ice cream does.
So what does it taste like? Basically nothing actually. Even the people at the shop tell you that you’ll taste nothing and it will mostly just pass through your system. Definitely a bit of a waste (literally) when you consider it.
However it is beautiful. And definitely a bit of a novelty. But in a town where it is really hard to stand out, businesses seem to try to do anything they can to get press. And well here I am, giving them press.

So what about yourself? Would you try it? Do you get suckered in (like I do) to novelty foods and desserts?
