I love Japan, for its amazing culture, long history, and even its random oddities. One such was when I discovered these lovely things while wandering through the aisles of a local convenience store.
Yup if you guessed what you are seeing there, those juice box looking things are actually alcohol. While they probably aren’t juice, but they are about the closest alcoholic juice boxes that I’ve seen anywhere. I don’t drink myself so I don’t have a reference to test them out (and the folks that I know had already departed the country by now as well).
The little plastic cans above them that appear like they should contain potato chips or nuts are actually alcohol too. Although it wouldn’t surprise me if those rice brewed pop-tops were potato chip flavored sake given Japan’s affinity for novelty flavored snack foods like wasabi flavored kit-kats (pretty good by the way) and cucumber Pepsi (not so great).
Ironically the little STOP! Sign there is talking about preventing underage drinking. Although doesn’t it appear as though that is their target market too?
Have you ever tried these little alcohol juice boxes (or anything else like it)? If so, what did you think? What do they taste like? Should other countries adopt these sort of products?

I wonder if wasabi kit-kats are good with cucumber Pepsi?

That would be a good question perhaps. There was also a chocolate soda that I had on a different trip to Japan that was actually pretty good. They have lots of random fad flavors for beverages and snacks in japan for some reason. It seems every couple months they are coming out with something new!
