As a man with facial hair, I always find that I need to shave and trim on a regular basis to keep it from being unkempt. Well if letting it grow wild is your style, perhaps this isn’t the post for you. But for those like me, finding the best travel beard trimmer is important.
The reason I picked a waterproof beard trimmer (or water resistant) is that I find being able to use it in the shower and being able to clean it easily is a huge advantage. I looked at both types of shavers though, those that I can rinse off after trimming and those that work very well in the shower too. This way it gives some good options for different price points and needs as well.
I’ve tried so many different shavers. I guess perhaps I’m just rather picky, but I don’t like ones that don’t work well in a variety of situations. Oh and waterproof trimmers that work great for both beard and mustaches.

What to look for in a beard and mustache trimmer
Price
This is always a factor. You will see things in a huge variety of price points. However, I found that things under about $20 dollars to generally be of poor quality and not lasting very long. I’d love to be proven wrong here though! So if you know of a good option in that lower price range, do let me know and I’d love to test it.
Waterproof-ness
Not all of the shavers are as waterproof as others. Some you can use in the shower and some you can only really use to rinse off at the end. Both have their pluses and minuses. Some of them do require more maintenance too like regular oiling. I wanted a shower beard trimmer that held up to the wear and tear I knew mine would incur on my trips.
Trim Levels
Some of the trimmers give you very granulated levels in terms of shaving and trimming. Some of them only offer a few different sizes. I prefer those that give you a sense of how long each of the values is or at the very least gives you a lot of options. Smaller level increments are generally better for me as I like to get close but not too close.
Durability
You want one that will stay sharp and also hold up to a lot of abuse. If you are going to travel, this is important in terms of what you’ll use.
Size
Most of these I feel tend to be of a generally travel-able size. I look for something without too many attachments however as these tend to get lost or tend to take up more space (like require a bag). Plus I want to make sure they are travel beard trimmers that I can fly with.
Power Conversion
Getting one that will work for charging from 220V or 120V is going to be a huge advantage. Make sure to pay attention to this though before using it overseas. One of my favorite go-to trimmers, however, doesn’t charge on 220V and its hard to take along to some of the international trips.
Beard and Mustache Trimmer Product Reviews
Lets take a look at some of the options that are available for electric mustache and beard shavers on the market. Some of these will be fully waterproof so you can shave and trim in the shower and unfortunately some will be partially waterproof where you can just rinse off the blades at the end. The reason is that there are sadly just not enough options for fully waterproof and so I’ve actually used both types and wanted to review both types for you.
Panasonic ER-GB42-K 19 Precision Hair and Beard Trimmer for Wet/Dry Wash
This is the replacement for my favorite option on the market and one of my go-to trimmers for most of my trips. I love the fact that it has 19 setting levels for trimming so I can always get it to a level that is just right for me. It does a really good job of getting my beard even and it holds up well to drops and abuse. It is also really easy to clean and useable in the shower. I haven’t found that I have needed to oil the shaver at all, although I do have oil on hand just in case. I’ve heard people complaining about the need to oil after using it in the shower, but that was not the case for me. The charger is bigger than I would like for travel, especially for lightweight travel. Be warned though that the charger does not convert to 220V so that you can damage the charger if you use it overseas. The shaver runs for about 50minutes on a full charge. This option I don’t love as much as the original, but it still does a good job, and its quieter! {Editor’s Pick}
Pros
- Rugged and durable and good for everyday use
- 19 different shave levels (.5mm increments)
- Cleans easily and waterproof
Cons
- Does not convert to 220v
- Charger is a bit large for travel

Panasonic ER224S Men’s Cordless Wet/Dry Hair, Beard and Body Electric Trimmer
Another Panasonic option to consider. I don’t like this one as much as I do the [amazon asin=B008KEJ1LM&text=Panasonic ER-GB40-S] but I think it’s a good option for those who want one that is a bit lower in price. I didn’t find this one to be as durable as the other Panasonic (perhaps that explains the lower price) and it is a bit bulkier as well. Also the dial was something I didn’t like as much either. But what I did like was that it basically has all the features I really need at a really low price. This is great for those who may be traveling and are worried about damaging a higher priced shaver. It works rather well in the shower and it seems to hold up to normal wear and tear. It has 14 adjustment levels for your beard which is generally good enough I think.
Pros
- Works in the Shower
- 14 different shave levels
- 50-minute shave duration on full battery
Cons
- Build quality could be improved (although likely won’t be as its an older design)
- Does not convert to 220v

Philips Norelco Beard trimmer Series 3100
High-quality beard trimmer for good everyday use at a reasonable price. I like the Norelco brand and this beard trimmer is a good mix of price and quality for trimming of the beard and mustache. The blades cut rather well and evenly and the guide is good and can be adjusted to 20 different lengths. Although honestly I only ever really use about 3 of them, it is still nice to have those options as well as the granularity in sizes.
The downside though of this shaver is that it is not fully waterproof, just water resistant. So it is not recommended to shave in the shower, but you can rinse off the blades for easy cleaning. Great for trimming when you are right out of the shower. I sometimes shave before I go in the shower and then use the shower to rinse off any leftover hair in my beard. I do like that the battery lasts longer than some of the other options so for many trips I don’t need to pack the charger with me. Note: I haven’t traveled with this one overseas yet, and I haven’t found info on whether it will work with 220v
Pros
- 20 Different shave levels
- Good Quality Titanium Blades
- Batter Lasts for 2 hours
Cons
- Not fully waterproof
- Build quality could be better

Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer Series 5100
I do really like this option among many of the various trimmers out there. It has an overall decent build quality and a lot of options for shaving lengths and even included guides. They do get lost easily however so I like the option that comes with the little carrying bag but it is way overpriced for such a small added benefit (it does come with an extra “body comb” as well).
The trimmer is completely waterproof and can be used in the shower. Although for some reason I worry that it will eventually breakdown compared to other models. Maybe that is just my paranoia setting in there. The power button on this one compared to some of the other Philips is a bit easier to turn on and off which is a plus. Most of them feel like I need nails to be able to get the button to move but not so with this model. Overall it’s a good option with a reasonable middle of the road price.
Pros
- 3-4 guides/combs and 17 length sizes
- converts voltages
- fully waterproof
- Does not require oiling
Cons
- Shorter 70 minute charge time
- Build quality could be better

Braun BT3240 Beard / Hair Trimmer for Men
I’ve been using various Braun shavers for years that I have purchased both in the US and overseas. Overall this is a rather good option with a reasonable build quality and some included comb/guides.
This shaver says that it is “100% waterproof” but it is not meant to be used in the shower. You can, however, wash the blades with water which is an “ok” compromise, but if you are looking for something to shave with in the shower, check out a different shaver such as the [AAWP asin=B07XJZ1NF5&text=ERB42-K]
I do like that this shaver does convert between voltages so it is great to take overseas. The blades appear to be good quality as well and should hold up to normal wear and tear. The build quality isn’t the best of the shavers but I think it will do for most people.
The shaver also comes with a huge 39 trim levels. I guess they say “more is better” but I found that that to be a bit more than necessary. If you are like me you generally only use a few, but it might be good if this includes the “few you use” when others may skip over the optimal size for you.
Pros
- Converts Voltages
- High-quality blades (lifetime guarantee)
- Includes 2 combs
Cons
- Cannot be used in the shower
- 60-minute battery life

Remington PG6255 WetTech Lithium Powered Head, Beard, & Body Grooming Kit, Trimmer
I do like the Remington brand and this one seems to be generally well made. The one thing I really dislike about this one is that comes in so many separate pieces. you cannot just click to change the beard thickness levels you need to actually change the guides. These can easily be lost though over time, however. It’d be nice if it came with a bag to keep all of these pieces together too.
Having the separate body and shaver attachment is nice too if you want to get a close shave on your face or body. The other above shavers won’t shave as close as this one will.
This one is fully waterproof and can be used in the shower. One of the only Remington brand trimmers that I found that can do this. I don’t know why Panasonic seems to corner the market in waterproof shavers.
The stainless steel blades seem to be good quality and don’t require oiling which is good. I hope they last the test of time though.
Pros
- Converts Voltages
- Includes shaver and trimmer attachment
- Can be used in the shower
Cons
- 70 Minute battery life
- Only 5 lengths that can be set by included combs
- Too many separate parts

Hey Anwar, thanks for sharing those great reviews. By the way which shower body groomer do you suggest for a middle-aged person. Thanks in advance for your help.
Anwar says
I haven’t tested any body groomers yet. Some of the above would certainly do the trick though!

I made the mistake once of not buying a waterproof shaver….what a huge mistake. It broke down a week after i bought when too much water got in. Protect your investment – buy a waterproof one.

Hey Anwar,
This is a great overview of some of the different waterproof shavers that are out there on the market. Like you I prefer to keep my face nice and smooth rather than full of hair. I will definitely be giving one of these a go.
While I will disagree with you there are some quality products that are under $20 that might just be my experience. Thanks for this post.
