Cape town is one of the absolutely most beautiful cities I have yet to visit in the world. There is something about this place with the beach, the mountains, oceans, colorful buildings that just make it a perfect spot to stay for a few days, weeks, or more. And Finding the Best Places to Stay in Cape Town shouldn’t bust one’s Budget.
I sometimes think if I left the US I would move here. It has such a colorful mix of cultures, food, weather, that it would be a great place I think to set up shop.
But like anywhere, if you are in town for a bit and looking for where to stay, we wanted to help you get through some of that as well. So here are a few places to stay in Capetown on various budgets.
Criteria
Price
Price is obviously a factor. There is so much to choose from in this city that you could easily stay budget or you could stay in the high hundreds of even thousands of dollars. Whether you are staying in a basic room or staying in a waterfront Villa you’ll have plenty of choices here.
- $ : less than $100
- $$ : $100 – $300
- $$$ : $300 – $500
- $$$$ : greater than 500+
Type
You may be willing to rough it a bit and do a hostel, or you may require lounge access and a certain thread count. So we look at both the luxury level and the budge level for those in any sort of price point. We also take a look at some apartments as well for those looking to stay longer.
Location
Location is certainly a factor like anywhere. But in a city like Capetown being near the center is not necessarily the most important factor if being near the beach is more important to you.
Wi-Fi
Umm this is basically a non-starter these days. Every hotel these days needs to offer Wi-Fi.
Rating
Hotel quality can change and we recognize one good or bad experience can be a fluke. So we look at the ratings of the hotels to see which have consistently been doing well. We generally look for things that are 8+ or 9+ only.
Parking
Parking is key for us. We found that being in Cape town having your own vehicle was definitely worthwhile and having parking very important. Some places have ample street parking and some private parking. Although for those without a car getting around town is easy enough with Uber as well.
Spa / Wellness Center / Gym
This is basically a must have for the really high end hotels. I’m particularly interested in Gyms here for myself when I’m traveling. Although a Spa and Wellness center are also very nice (however I often find in a big city you can get a great experience for less cost outside of the big fancy hotels).

Hotels
We break out hotels by star rating. This generally translates to cost as well. In addition we use the “Price” designation we mentioned above in terms of costs. I mostly stay in the 3 – 4 star range. Although sometimes in the 5 star range when on business travel and 2 star range when trying to cut costs on trips.
- $ : less than $100
- $$ : $100 – $250
- $$$ : $250 – $500
- $$$$ : greater than 500+

Hostels
We looked also at some of the hostel options in Cape Town as well. Criteria here focused on cleanliness, location, amenities, and other benefits to those looking for hostels.

Apartments
We also checked on those who may be staying longer. I often used to stay at places like these when on business travel. These are also great for families and for large groups. In addition, there is the option of renting some incredible villas in places such as Camp’s Bay.
-
$ – Oxford House
-
$$ – Mouille Point Apartments (note: WIFI outside of lobby is charged)
-
$$ – Kaya Stay
Villas
You’ll find more of these on AirBNB or VRBO but there are a lot of large multi-bedroom villas one can rent in places such as Camps Bay. Staying in a Villa was one of my highlights of travel in Cape Town and definitely a great bonding experience if you are with a large group of people. Of note though, many of them are not cheap (upwards of 1000-2000 a night) but if you have enough people it can be economical.
There are a lot for a huge variety of budgets and guest sizes. So it would be hard to narrow it down.
