Shinbashi 72 Restaurant
I think one of the most incredible things in Covid is that there are actually new places opening up. In my neighborhood here of the Upper West Side, I’ve seen several restaurants open up during my time here. One of the newest ones is Shinbashi 72, a Japanese restaurant which features Japanese Comfort food.
The restaurant opened in early November, but I didn’t notice it myself until recently. This shop took over the space that was previously occupied by the West Side Café which closed its down the prior year.
The café features Japanese Comfort food. Which among those are Japanese Curry, Katsu, Beef Bowls, Ramen, and one of my personal favorite Japanese dishes Okonomiyaki.
The above photo is of the Japanese Curry Dish, well packaged and prepared for transport. I have to say the food quality was pretty top notch. I’m looking forward to getting back there to actually try some of the other dishes as well. Such as the Okonomoyaki. If you are a follower of the blog you know I’ve traveled to Japan extensively so this is something I’ve missed a lot.
The Store
The Store itself is pretty small, although for a time in Covid it’s perfect given that indoor space is less needed for eating. As seen below there is actually space set aside for tables and counter space for standing space. Perhaps when things improve with Covid we’ll see this being used more often.
One of my favorite things about this store is that it’s not only a cafe for prepared food. There is actually a pretty decent sized section of Japanese goods (imported from Japan). You can get some Japanese spices and other cooking ingredients, snacks, and candies. I highly recommend some of the interesting flavored shrimp chips and various flavors of Kit Kat if you are intended on trying some new things. There is also a small fridge / freezer section as well with imported fish as well as ice cream and other beverages as well. You can find these in some other places in New York as well, but they are hard to find here on the Upper West Side and the addition of these options is highly appreciated.
Overall the Café was great. The service was very quick, the staff incredible nice. I really did feel I was back in Japan in some ways, just with some of the small niceties and details. I will certainly be frequenting this place more often. Hopefully you will too. I think it’s a great option for the Upper West Side. If you visit Shinbashi 72 Upper West Side because of this post, do let them know and comment below. Not that I’ll get anything or even that they know I wrote about it, but I like knowing if my blog helped bring people to any places.
