I’ve been getting a lot of emails lately about the cherry blossoms here in DC. As always it is one of the most popular times of the year in the city and my favorite time of the year as well. I always look forward to the cherry blossoms not only for them heralding in spring but because they really change the city.
This year things have been quite a bit colder than usual. I remember sometimes in previous years being caught off guard with the blooms coming early.
Official Predicted Bloom Schedule:
National Park Service: April 11 – 14, 2015
Washington Post: April 9 – 13, 2015
I think that is probably pretty accurate in terms of date. I would say it will be at least another week or two before we start seeing the blossoms coming out. The weather still is rather colder than expected and with snow even occurring last Friday I expect the weather has done a lot to delay the blooms overall.
Some recent photos of the blossoms.
I couldn’t definitely tell if the above flowers were instead peach blossoms. I usually wait until they are in full bloom to know for sure, but some of the trees are slowly starting to open but its only a bloom here or there and certainly not many.
However for those who already planned their trips to DC, the National Cherry Blossom Festival has already started and runs through April 12th.
Be sure to check out the official website for details on all the activities.
